The story is set in ancient Akkad and centers on a young Mathayus who witnesses his father, Ashur, being murdered by the ruthless General Sargon using dark magic. Seeking justice, Mathayus undergoes six years of intensive training with the elite Black Scorpions.

Upon his return, he discovers Sargon has usurped the throne. To defeat the magically protected king, Mathayus embarks on a perilous quest alongside his childhood friend Layla and the Greek poet Aristophanes. Their journey takes them to the Underworld to retrieve the enchanted Sword of Damocles from the dark goddess Astarte, the only weapon capable of penetrating Sargon's magic.
