Space Engineers Sparks Of The Future Update V1 ... May 2026

While the paid DLC offered the flashy bits—like the with their distinctive circular flare and the Sci-Fi Ion Engines —the free update for all players was equally significant. It brought massive quality-of-life improvements, specifically to Automatic Weather and Lighting .

For years, Space Engineers was defined by its rugged, industrial look—gray steel, functional thrusters, and a sense of cold survival in a vacuum. Sparks of the Future injected color and light into this void. The introduction of and Interior Walls with integrated lighting allowed players to move away from dark, cramped corridors toward sleek, "utopian" station designs. The update (v1.195) represented a pivotal shift for Space Engineers , moving the game's aesthetic beyond "NASA-punk" utility and into the vibrant, high-tech realm of sci-fi futurism. Released in June 2020, this update was more than just a cosmetic pack; it was a celebration of the community’s creativity and a nod to the "cyberpunk" genre that was dominating the cultural zeitgeist at the time. The update signaled that space didn't just have to be a place to survive; it could be a place to thrive with style. This shift encouraged a new wave of "mega-city" builds on planets and orbital malls that felt inhabited rather than just operated. Sparks of the Future was the update that allowed Space Engineers to grow a soul. It took a game that was essentially a complex physics sandbox and gave it the tools to become a cinematic experience. By embracing the "rule of cool," v1.195 ensured that the future of the game would be just as bright—and colorful—as the stars themselves.

What is this?

This is a randomizer - a program which changes up data inside the game in a random manner. In a Pokémon game, for example, you can have three random starter Pokémon - and random wild Pokémon on each route or with other trainers, too. In case you enjoy a game, but want to mix it up a little while playing it again, a randomizer is a wonderful tool.

Another popular use of Pokémon randomizers is to race the game. With a group of other people, you make one randomized ROM for every player, and start playing together, seeing who beats a gym leader or the game first. These games often happen on SpeedRunsLive.

This randomizer a little experimental. Among other things, it supports randomizing any single Pokémon into Pokémon Red. Here's a screenshot:

Feel free to try it out! That being said, the randomizer is still a work in progress, and sometimes I add shiny new features without testing them thoroughly first. If you intend to do a long-term playthrough, like a Let's Play, maybe hold off a little bit until the randomizer becomes more stable. Wouldn't want your game to crash near the end of the game!

Eventually, I intend on supporting a variety of different games. I also have a lot of ideas coming for Pokémon Red, like random maps. By the way, if you want to randomize Pokémon games other than Red, check out Dabomstew's Universal Randomizer.
