Russell leaves an empty chair at the table in memory of Iris, decorated with yellow irises. During the dinner, the lights go out for a performance. When they come back on, history appears to repeat itself: Pauline Wetherby is slumped over, apparently poisoned just like her sister. The Reveal

The story resumes in London when Poirot receives an anonymous gift: a . This flower was a significant motif from that fatal night in Buenos Aires. Shortly after, Barton Russell contacts Poirot, revealing he has never believed Iris killed herself. To uncover the truth, Russell decides to recreate that tragic night exactly as it happened. Russell had killed his wife two years earlier for her money, and he planned to kill Pauline for the same reason—to secure the remainder of the inheritance. The entire "re-enactment" was a ruse by Russell to frame one of the other guests and finally rid himself of the sister-in-law who stood between him and the full fortune.

Two years ago, Poirot was in Argentina when he was invited to a dinner party hosted by . During the meal, Russell's wife, Iris , died suddenly after drinking champagne poisoned with cyanide. At the time, the death was ruled a suicide, but Poirot remained unconvinced. However, local political unrest forced him to leave the country before he could complete a proper investigation.
