Set in the late 1870s, the film follows (Tom Cruise), a cynical and alcoholic American Civil War veteran haunted by his role in the massacres of Native Americans. He is hired by Japanese industrialist Mr. Omura to train the Emperor's newly formed Imperial Army in modern warfare tactics using firearms.
During an ill-prepared first engagement, Algren is captured by a group of traditionalist samurai led by (Ken Watanabe). While held as a prisoner in a remote mountain village, Algren begins to admire the samurai’s disciplined way of life and their code of honor, known as Bushido .
