In the late 1970s, Timothy B. Schmit was the "new guy" in the Eagles, having just replaced bassist Randy Meisner. To introduce him to the fans on a strong note, band leaders Don Henley and Glenn Frey encouraged him to bring his own material to the table.

Schmit presented a "little piece of a tune" he had been working on, which was loosely based on his own personal experiences.
