The Gallipoli Campaign was a major World War I military operation aimed at knocking the Ottoman Empire out of the war by capturing the Dardanelles straits.

: The campaign was a costly failure for the Allies . Over 44,000 Allied soldiers died, including 8,700 Australians and 2,779 New Zealanders. The Ottoman Empire lost approximately 87,000 men defending their territory.
