Acanthocytosis

Acanthocytosis is a clinical condition defined by the presence of acanthocytes —abnormal, spiky red blood cells with irregular, thorn-like projections. Derived from the Greek word akantha (meaning "thorn"), these misshapen cells lose their standard biconcave shape, which can impair their ability to navigate small blood vessels and impact overall blood deformability. While it is not a standalone disease, acanthocytosis serves as a critical diagnostic marker for several rare genetic and acquired disorders, most notably within the neuroacanthocytosis spectrum and certain metabolic or liver-related conditions.
