It was a clumsy, agonizing shove. His body felt heavy, a weight he’d never known in the buoyancy of the deep. But with each lurch, his gills strained to pull life from the damp air, and his fins held firm against the earth.

Millions of years later, that desperate, heavy push lived on. It was in the claw of a lizard, the wing of a hawk, and the hand of a child reaching for a high shelf. Fin was gone, but his "mistake"—that strange, sturdy deformity—had rewritten the blueprint of life. He hadn't just moved to a new pool; he had opened the door to the entire world. 1. Evolution

Fin lay in the shallow, sun-warmed tide pool, a world of safe stone and predictable currents. But the water was receding, and the oxygen was thin. It was a clumsy, agonizing shove

He reached the next pool just as the sun began to bake the mud. He survived. Millions of years later, that desperate, heavy push lived on

Unlike the others in his school, Fin had slightly thicker, sturdier pectoral fins—less like delicate fans and more like rubbery paddles. When the tide pulled back, leaving him stranded on the slick mud, he didn’t just gasp and wait. He pushed.
